This was of course the last long-distance ride in my u-life.
210 km, via Hankow, Xinzhou, Tuanfeng, Huanggang, Ezhou. You may be familiar with one of which – especially Hankow – all of them were locked down from January to March.
Although the first case was reported by the authority on 31st December – to most of the Wuhan residents, who would care about it at that time?
So did I.
When Songwei invited me to have a ride together on New Year’s Day, I immediately accepted. As the saying goes, 新年行大運!
We departed from school at 0830. We believed that we could complete our journey before sunset. That’s only 210km! If we could keep our pace at 30 kph, that would not be a problem. As I truly believed I would not ride until night, even though the temperature was 4 degree Celsius, I wore only a thin layer of cycling suit. Yes! For me, a thin layer is quite enough while cycling in daytime.
I got all wet when I was still in Hankow. That’s awful… as I had still 180km to go! I don’t really like something filthy sticking on my back all the time…
We took a break when we arrived in Xinzhou. It’s already noon; but we had still 110km to go… We had to hurry!
51km to Huangzhou, the town centre of Huanggang. It was our destination.
(9 km to Tuanfeng, 28km to Huangzhou and 73km away from Wuhan)
It was already 16:00 when we arrived at Huangzhou. The sun set at 18:00, but we were too hungry to continue. We found a restaurant to refill ourselves. It was only about 3 degree Celsius, but I wore only a layer of cycling suit. Therefore, I shivered when I was having my meal.
We went to Huanggang via Hankow, Xinzhou and Tuanfeng. We didn’t want to return along the same route, so we went back to school via Ezhou. We began our journey by crossing the Yangtze River to Hankow, the northern side of the river in the morning; Now, we travelled back to Ezhou, the southern side of river, via Ehuang Changjiang Daqiao (Ezhou-Huanggang Yangtze Bridge). This was the first time I went across the bridge and I was so excited.
We had still about 80km to go after we crossed the river. As the sun set soon and the temperature was going down quickly, we decided not to rest anymore. At the end we arrived at our dormitory at around eight.
